Description
Banana Foster is a classic New Orleans dessert featuring caramelized bananas in a buttery, rum-flavored sauce, flambéed to perfection. Served over vanilla ice cream, this elegant yet simple dish is a show-stopping treat that’s perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup banana liqueur (optional)
- 1/4 cup dark rum
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vanilla ice cream, for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until it dissolves into a thick, caramel-like sauce.
- Add the Bananas:
- Place the banana slices in the skillet, cut side down. Sprinkle with cinnamon and cook for 1–2 minutes on each side until softened and slightly caramelized.
- Flambé the Sauce:
- Carefully add the banana liqueur (if using) and rum to the skillet. Allow it to warm for a few seconds, then use a long match or lighter to ignite the alcohol. Gently shake the pan until the flames subside.
- Finish the Sauce:
- Stir in the vanilla extract, coating the bananas evenly in the sauce.
- Serve:
- Spoon the warm banana mixture and sauce over scoops of vanilla ice cream. Serve immediately.
Notes
- To make this dish non-alcoholic, replace the rum and banana liqueur with orange juice or water.
- Use slightly firm bananas to prevent them from becoming too mushy during cooking.
- Serve with whipped cream or nuts for extra texture and flavor.
