The warm cinnamon flavor combined with the cake’s tender texture makes it a family favorite.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt

For the Cinnamon Swirl:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For the Streusel Topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  • Prepare the Streusel Topping:
    • In a small bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter. Stir until the mixture becomes crumbly. Set aside.
  • Make the Cinnamon Swirl:
    • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • Mix the Cake Batter:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture alternately with the sour cream (or Greek yogurt), starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  • Assemble the Cake:
    • Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon swirl mixture evenly over the batter.
    • Add the rest of the batter and smooth the top. Sprinkle the streusel topping over the cake.
  • Bake the Cake:
    • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For an extra texture, you can add chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans to the streusel topping.
